Smaller Footprint

20ft Standard Container

The 20ft is the smaller of the two standard sizes. Inside, it measures about 19 ft 4 in long, 7 ft 9 in wide and 7 ft 10 in high, and it can be placed in spots a 40ft cannot reach.

It suits a renovation, seasonal equipment, or a business that has outgrown its back room. It needs 110 feet of straight clearance at the drop point.

Common Uses

  • ✓ Renovations in Charlotte's older intown neighborhoods, where lots in Dilworth, Elizabeth, Plaza Midwood and Wesley Heights are small and often have no garage.
  • ✓ Tool and material storage on job sites in Mecklenburg, Wake, Guilford, Union and Johnston counties, in place of a daily load in and load out.
  • ✓ Farm, timber and hunt club storage on coastal plain and Sandhills parcels that have no lockable building.
  • ✓ Race shop storage through the Mooresville, Concord and Kannapolis belt, holding chassis parts, wheels, tires and tooling next to the shop.
  • ✓ Sites that cannot take a 40ft, such as lots under the oak canopy in Raleigh or in Greensboro's Fisher Park, where two 20ft boxes can sit in two separate spots.
  • ✓ Coastal and sound side properties from Wilmington to the Outer Banks, where salt air is a factor.

Double the Space

40ft Standard Container

Twice the storage of a 20ft in the same width. The 40ft standard suits contractors, farms and businesses with large equipment or many pallets.

The trade is access. A 40ft needs 130 feet of straight clearance for the tilt-bed to set it down. On a constrained lot, two 20ft units may fit where one 40ft will not.

Common Uses

  • ✓ Warehouse and dock overflow for distribution operations along the I-85 and I-40 corridors, as seasonal room without committing to square footage.
  • ✓ Port and drayage overflow around the Port of Wilmington, the Port of Morehead City and the CSX intermodal terminal at Rocky Mount, where owned ground storage avoids per diem on a steamship line's box.
  • ✓ Aerospace and heavy truck supplier storage at the plant fence line, from the cluster at Piedmont Triad International Airport to the Toyota battery supplier base around Liberty.
  • ✓ Equipment and implement storage on row crop operations through Nash, Edgecombe, Wayne, Greene and Duplin counties, where there is room to work and a straight pull off a state maintained road.
  • ✓ Furniture market inventory and showroom staging across Guilford County between the April and October shows in High Point.
  • ✓ Seasonal lockable storage for tobacco and sweet potato operations.

Most Space

40ft High Cube Container

Same footprint as the standard 40ft, one foot taller: 9 ft 6 in outside and about 8 ft 10 in inside. That foot can help with tall equipment and overhead services, while insulation and a finished floor reduce the available headroom.

The extra foot suits conversions such as offices, bunkhouses, break rooms and workshops. It needs the same clearance as any 40ft: 130 feet of straight run.

Common Uses

  • ✓ Pallet racking for freight yards and supplier lots at the crossing of I-40 and I-85 in the Triad.
  • ✓ Any build you intend to insulate and finish, because closed cell foam on the walls and ceiling takes headroom you cannot get back in a standard 40ft.
  • ✓ A furniture plant, upholstery shop or finishing house around Hickory, Lenoir, Thomasville or Lexington can store frames, foam and finished goods upright.
  • ✓ Dry storage for feed, bedding and equipment between houses at poultry and hog operations in Wilkes, Union, Sampson and Duplin counties.
  • ✓ Material staging on site for trade contractors at the data center campuses at Maiden, Lenoir and Forest City.

Modified Containers

A modified container starts as a standard steel box and gains the parts you need: doors, windows, insulation, electrical, climate control. The result is a weatherproof structure that can be placed wherever the delivery truck can reach.

Which modifications matter depends on where it will sit. Insulation and ventilation are decided by climate, not preference, so tell us the site and the intended use before the specification is fixed.

Common Uses

  • ✓ Job site offices for general contractors working in Wake, Mecklenburg, Johnston, Brunswick and Cabarrus counties.
  • ✓ Secure tool and parts rooms for contractors working near Fort Bragg at Fayetteville, Camp Lejeune at Jacksonville and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base at Goldsboro.
  • ✓ Workshops and studios on High Country property, where two 20ft units can place where a 40ft cannot.
  • ✓ Break rooms and dry storage at quarry, timber and data center sites that run crews well away from any building.
  • ✓ Hunt camp buildings on Sandhills and coastal plain tracts that have no structure on them at all.

Refrigerated

Refrigerated (Reefer) Containers

A reefer is a shipping container with a refrigeration unit built into one end, holding anywhere from -25 degrees F to +70 degrees F. The insulation is part of the original build, not added afterwards, which is why it holds temperature the way a retrofitted box cannot.

Available in 20ft and 40ft. It needs a 460V 3-phase connection, or a compatible generator where 3-phase power is not on site. Confirm your power supply before ordering.

Common Uses

  • ✓ Cold ground storage for sweet potato and produce packers in Nash, Wilson, Johnston, Sampson and Duplin counties through a short, fixed season.
  • ✓ Cold storage for commercial fishing and seafood operations at Wanchese, Beaufort, Morehead City and Oak Island, between the dock and the buyer.
  • ✓ Cold storage for caterers, event operators and film production crews at a site that has none.
  • ✓ Walk in capacity in the lot for restaurants and grocers in Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham and Asheville.
  • ✓ Cold storage for hops, kegs and packaging on the yard at breweries around Asheville and Mills River.

Before You Order

Site Preparation and Delivery Clearance

Containers arrive on a tilt-bed truck. Knowing your clearance before the truck is booked is what keeps a delivery from turning into a second trip.

Required Straight Clearance

20ft
110 feet straight clearance
Measured from the drop point in a straight line
40ft
130 feet straight clearance
Standard and high cube both

Also check: at least 10 ft of width, at least 15 ft of driving height and at least 22 ft of height along the entire unloading path, plus the road surface. Gravel and dirt may be workable, but flag steep grades and soft ground before booking.
