Raleigh Use Cases

Uses for Containers in Raleigh

Contractor Jobsite Security

A container on the job site holds tools, copper, fixtures and material under lock for crews working in Wake, Johnston and Franklin counties, in place of a daily load-in and load-out.

Lab and Plant Build-Out Staging

Biomanufacturing and lab construction projects can run for months or years. A container at the fence line holds tooling, spare parts, staged material and clean packaging under lock.

Fairgrounds, Event and Vendor Storage

Raleigh hosts the North Carolina State Fair and other shows and festivals. A container on a vendor's yard can hold tents, tables, coolers, signage and equipment between dates.

Renovation and Move Storage Inside the Beltline

Houses in Historic Oakwood, Mordecai, Boylan Heights, Five Points and Hayes Barton sit on small lots with mature trees, often without a garage. During a renovation, a container in the driveway holds furniture, cabinetry and salvaged millwork on site.

Farm and Land Storage East of the City

Johnston, Franklin, Harnett and Nash counties include working farmland. A container at the field holds seed, chemicals, irrigation parts, fencing, chainsaws and implements dry and out of the weather.

Campus, School and Nonprofit Storage

A container can hold chairs, sound gear, athletic equipment, seasonal program supplies and donation drives for a school, congregation or nonprofit.

Delivery Logistics

What to Know About Raleigh Container Delivery

A few things shape how a delivery goes in this area:

  • The canopy matters in Raleigh. Willow oaks and water oaks arch over the streets and driveways of Historic Oakwood, Five Points, Hayes Barton and Cameron Park. A tilt-bed truck has to raise its bed to slide the container off, so the clear path overhead needs to be well above the height of the box. Walk the route from the street and look up before you order.
  • Ground varies across Wake County. Much of the county is Piedmont clay over weathered rock, but a band through western and southern Wake has clay that shrinks and swells with moisture. A container set straight on that ground can go out of level, so put blocks or timbers under the four corner castings.
  • Head southeast toward Johnston and Harnett and the soil turns sandy as you approach the Sandhills. Loaded trucks can bog in soft sand that a pickup crosses without noticing, so tell us whether the last quarter mile is sand, clay or gravel.
  • Raleigh containers come out of the Norfolk, Virginia depot, roughly 180 miles away. Describe the drop spot, the gate width and the turnaround in your quote request so the delivery can be reviewed before it is scheduled.
  • Drop spots in Raleigh need at least 10 feet of width along the whole delivery path, in addition to a straight run of 110 feet for a 20ft container or 130 feet for a 40ft.
  • Subdivisions in Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Morrisville and Wake Forest can have covenants that restrict what can be stored in view of the street, and the association enforces them rather than the city. Read yours before the truck arrives.

Raleigh Container Questions

Raleigh's Unified Development Ordinance has no shipping container rule. The temporary use permit list covers things like construction trailers, produce stands and model homes, and storage containers are not on it. The outdoor storage section mentions shipping containers only as a kind of packaging for merchandise, and only in listed nonresidential districts. A residential placement is therefore a staff determination against the accessory structure standards for your district, not something to assume. Call the Planning and Development Customer Service Center at 919-996-2500, or book one of the city's free zoning appointments, ask with your address in hand, and get the answer in writing. The city issues its own permits and runs its own inspections, so it is one office rather than two.
Sometimes. The answer depends more on the trees than on the gate. Raleigh is called the City of Oaks, and the same canopy over those streets can stop a tilt-bed truck, because the bed has to rise to slide the box off. Walk the route from the street to the drop spot and look up. Two 20ft containers can fit a lot that a 40ft cannot, and where a rear lane exists it can be the approach. Describe the approach and the drop spot in your quote request.
Raleigh is served from a depot in Norfolk, Virginia, about 182 miles away, while Charlotte is served from a depot about 14.9 miles away. A 20ft Wind and Water Tight container delivers to Raleigh at $2,555 against $2,540 in Charlotte, a difference of $15. On the 40ft and 40ft high cube Wind and Water Tight, Raleigh is $2,979, below both Charlotte and Greensboro. On one-trip containers, and on 20ft and 40ft Cargo Worthy, Raleigh is higher than both. Give us your ZIP and the grade you want and a Container One sales representative will quote the delivered price for your address.
